Keto Chapter¶
This chapter is optional and stricter
A standard ketogenic diet keeps net carbs ~20–50 g/day, protein moderate, and ~70% of calories from fat to reach ketosis. Keto is restrictive and not right for everyone — see the health note. General references: Harvard T.H. Chan Nutrition Source: Ketogenic Diet; Diabetes UK low-carb guidance.
The tension with the standard plate¶
The core ProteinPlate leans on legumes and besan (chana, moong, chickpea flour) for protein. These are excellent foods, but relatively carb-heavy, so they don't fit a strict keto target.
| Food (per 100 g cooked) | ~Net carbs | Keto verdict |
|---|---|---|
| Chickpeas / chana | ~20–27 g | ❌ too high |
| Moong sprouts | ~14 g | ⚠️ small amounts only |
| Besan cheela (per piece) | ~12–15 g | ⚠️ limit |
| Paneer | ~3 g | ✅ ideal |
| Eggs | ~1 g | ✅ ideal |
| Chicken | 0 g | ✅ ideal |
| Leafy greens / broccoli | ~2–4 g | ✅ ideal |
| Avocado | ~2 g | ✅ ideal |
| Nuts / seeds | low–mod | ✅ in portions |
How to make the plate keto¶
- Swap the protein anchor toward paneer, eggs, chicken, fish/prawns, and tofu — drop or sharply limit chana/moong.
- Replace besan cheela with an egg + paneer "chilla" (no besan) or almond/coconut-flour pancakes.
- Keep & expand the non-starchy veg and salads (already the plate's strongest keto-friendly habit).
- Add fat deliberately: olive oil, ghee, avocado, full-fat curd, cheese, more nuts/seeds.
- Drop entirely: rice, roti, potato, sugar, high-carb fruit, and most legumes.
A sample keto day¶
| Meal | Plate |
|---|---|
| Breakfast | 3-egg vegetable omelette in ghee + avocado slices + coffee with cream |
| Lunch | Tawa paneer tikka + big leafy salad with olive oil + sautéed broccoli & mushroom |
| Snack | 25 g nuts/seeds + cucumber spears with a hung-curd dip |
| Dinner | Chicken tikka or pan-fried fish + spinach sautéed in ghee + cucumber raita |
Rough day total: ~1,500–1,700 kcal, ~30–40 g net carbs, ~110 g protein.
Honest cautions¶
- Not for everyone. Avoid keto, or do it only under medical supervision, if you are pregnant/breastfeeding, have type 1 diabetes, kidney disease, a history of disordered eating, or take certain medications.
- Diabetes + medication: low-carb eating can lower blood sugar fast — insulin/sulfonylurea doses may need adjusting with your doctor to avoid hypoglycaemia.
- The first 1–2 weeks can bring fatigue/headache ("keto flu"); hydration and electrolytes help.
- It's a tool, not a rule. The standard ProteinPlate is already excellent for weight and metabolic health without going fully keto.
